NEVER take your physical wellbeing for granted. It’s the most precious and valuable asset you have. Without it, life is much more challenging. Look after what you have in whatever way you need to. Being unwell impacts on relationships, earning ability, job and self esteem. Be safe and don’t do anything stupid to put your health at risk.
· The influence of Mind over Body and vice versa.
This is the cornerstone to your physical health and wellbeing. There is more and more in the popular press about poor “gut health” being the root cause of manymodern diseases due to the onset of inflammation and inflammatory disease.
“Leaky gut” is being touted as one of the possible causal factors for many chronic inflammatory diseases including arthritis to Celiac Disease, IBS, IBD (including Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease), Psoriasis, eczema and asthma.
Eating a healthy diet that promotes good gut health is a good place to start, but I’m not writing this chapter about the definitive "how to" diet and exercise.
I can only say that having dealt with chronic pain, aching joints, poor healing and impaired immune response, seeing a natropath in order to fix my gut health through taking a few supplements and making small tweaks in my diet, I have experienced a complete turnaround of many obvious imbalances. My skin has improved enormously, which was being very problematic, with awful hormonal breakouts, taking three weeks to subside and heal, leaving me with scars. Trust me, at my age (or any age ) looking like a pizza is no fun and not good for one’s self esteem. My hormones settled down, my aches cleared up to a large extent, and I WAS ABLE TO LOSE WEIGHT (YEP BELLY FAT IN PARTICULAR ) WITHOUT HAVING TO DO MORE EXERCISE. Plus, I had way more energy.
There is no need to go mad with this. By just walking more, 10,000 steps per day, is plenty. Building muscle by doing resistance weight is great, especially if you are aging over 40. HIT (High Intensity Training) is also good for weight loss and doesn’t require huge amounts of time.(Just determination and will power!!)
And then there is the fun stuff, dancing, martial arts, swimming and anything that gets you moving and takes your fancy!
Exercise has huge benefits for mental wellbeing as well, being recognized as an important modality in the treatment of depression.
Sitting has become the new smoking, and there is a trend towards “moving and movement” for health , mobility and flexibility. It has been recommended to me, not to sit for longer than 30 minutes at a time. Try doing that for a whole week!
Losing weight and exercising has long been recommended in the treatment of cardio vascular disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. Lets face it, losing weight and fitting into those favourite jeans is great for mental wellbeing.
If done in a group, exercise is also great for social and mental wellbeing.
A positive youthful mental attitude is a key tool to have. Aging throws many changing challenges through life, staying positive and focused, whilst being adaptive is a great way to handle these “rocks.
HEALTHY MIND HEALTHY BODY AND VICE VERSA
If you are feeling stuck in a rut, get help with whatever you need to move forward. It only need be a kick- start.
